The first set I came across was $24 (!) at a used children's store. I was a bit shocked, but just figured alphabet magnets must be a vintage-hard-to-find-novelty item? Then, last week, I stumbled across them at Micheal's...for $1. $24 used or $1 new? Hmm, I'm glad I passed up the first set I saw.
I didn't really get it when the cashier took one look at Leaf and said, "he'll really enjoy these when he's a little bit older." And then we got home and I excitedly dispersed the colorful set of ABC's on our fridge, at just the right level for Leaf to play with, arrange and rearrange, spell out his favorite words....wait...maybe that cashier was on to something. They ended up all over the floor 12 times before I moved them out of his reach. Until he's a little bit older.

You know what he's not too little for? The foam letters that go in the bathtub. Finn LOVED those when he was Leaf's age (and still uses them) they are fantastic for teaching letters.
I was going to suggest the foam letters, too. They don't slide under the frige!!!!!
I still have those magnet letters - maybe I should see what i can get for them???? $24!!!!! WOW!!!
